MP Imthiaz Bakeer Markar, is tipped to be appointed as the new chairman of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), sources said. SJB sources further said that Imthiaz Bakeer Markar, a veteran politician will also be appointed from the SJB national list for the next parliament to allow him time and space to be fully engaged with the responsibilities as the party chairman.
Bakeer Markar, who is the most senior Member of Parliament representing SJB, was elected to Parliament first in 1988 representing Beruwala electorate.
He was also the Deputy Minister of Housing and Construction in the Ranasinghe Premadasa Government and was also the Media Telecommunications Minister in the UNP Government from 2002 to 2004.
