The inaugural session of the Student Parliament of the Weragala Kanishta Vidyalaya, Kegalle was held recently (11) at the President’s Secretariat. The Leader of the House and the Minister of Education Dr. Susil Premajayantha, Mr. Sagala Ratnayake, Senior Adviser to the President on National Security and Chief of the Presidential Staff, Acting Secretary General of Parliament Mr. Hansa Abeyratne, Presidents Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Mr. Ashu Marasinghe, Additional Secretary (Administration) to the Prime Minister Mr. Harsha Wijewardene, Major Nadika Dangolla, Assistant Director of the Presidential Secretariat, Ms. Isuri Geeganage , Manager of the Bank of Ceylon Parliamentary Branch were present at this occasion.
Addressing the gathering, the Minister of Education Dr. Susil Premajayantha mentioned that by spreading the concept of student parliament as a co-curricular program in the school system, developing the knowledge regarding the Parliamentary system and democracy in children is intended.
Mr. Sagala Ratnayake, Senior Adviser to the President on National Security and Chief of the Presidential Staff, while addressing the occasion, pointed out that through the concept of student Parliament, children will have the opportunity to develop knowledge regarding the responsibility of the Parliament and give them a chance to become public representatives.
Furthermore, the Acting Secretary General of the Parliament of Sri Lanka, Mr. Hansa Abeyratne stated that the concept of student Parliament is very important to further strengthen the democratic framework.
The Prime Minister, Ministers and other Members of Parliament were sworn in after the election of the Speaker, starting the inaugural session of the Student Parliament of Weragala Kanishta Vidyalaya, Kegalle. In conjunction with this event, certificates were awarded to the student Parliament members of the school under the leadership of the dignitaries present.
Moreover, given the patronage of the Bank of Ceylon Parliamentary Branch, 37 accounts were opened and money was donated for 37 students of this school. A loudspeaker was also donated to the school.
The Parliament of Sri Lanka also presented books to Weragala Kanishta Vidyalaya, Kegalle also presented a commemorative plaque to the Communication Department of the Parliament of Sri Lanka and to the guests who were present.
For this program organized by the Communication Department of the Parliament of Sri Lanka and the President’s Secretariat, the officials of the Communication Department of the Parliament of Sri Lanka, Ms. Githani Subhasinghe, Director of Education, and the Principal of Weragala Kanishta Vidyalaya, Kegalle Ms. M. M. Chandani Thilakaratne, Ms. Surani Maheshika Wickramasinghe, who is in charge of the Student Parliament, and a group of teachers and other members of the teaching staff were also present.
