Increase in child births among underaged girls

Underaged girls almost every year give birth to between 20 and 25 babies, at Galle Mahamodara Maternity Hospital, Obstetrics and Gynecology Consultant Prof. Lanka Dasanayake said.

He said obstetricians and gynecologists have arranged to provide necessary clinical facilities as well as other advice for underage pregnant girls.

He also said due to the adverse social environment, ignorance, poverty, and lack of parental care, had led to the increase in the pregnancy in minor children. The professor was speaking as the chief guest of the annual prize giving at Akmeemana Talgasayaya Sri Ashwathatharama Viharashta Siri Pavarakitti Dhamma School.

Adolescent mothers (aged 10-19 years) face higher risks of eclampsia, puerperal endometritis and systemic infections than women aged 20-24 years, and babies of adolescent mothers face higher risks of low-birth weight, preterm birth and severe neonatal condition, he observed.
