Increased taxes, a cause for concern – Former President

SLPP leader and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday said that attempt is being made to incite the public through various manoeuvres and social media campaigns.

He pointed out that as the elections are approaching, we are once again witnessing efforts to lure the people and take them blindly in a certain direction through various propaganda tactics and social media campaigns without any accountability.

“Whatever the decisions taken by the public at elections, these decisions should be based on data,” he said.

Making special statement, the SLPP leader said that about 40 trade unions representing the professionals important sections in the country’s economy and the government sector have been conducting protests demanding the government to reduce the taxes.

“Another crisis is brewing up as professionals have started leaving the country due to higher tax rates. The country’s tax policy will become the main topic of the country during the next year as VAT is to be increased from next year,” he said.

“It is the responsibility of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna to ensure a stable government until a national election is held in the country,” SLPP leader and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa said.
