Independence Day ceremony held with dignity at reduced cost this year

All arrangements have been made to hold the 77th Independence Day celebrations in a dignified manner at a lesser cost at the Independence Square under the theme “Let’s Align for National Revival with an objective of instilling a sense of pride of the nation, said Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government Minister Professor Chandana Abeyratne.

Speaking at a press conference in Colombo Public Admistration and Home Affairs and Provincial Councils Minister Dr.Chandana Abeyratne said the Ministry has planned this year’s celebration to be conducted at a lower cost, with minimal inconvenience to the public and with increased public participation.

Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal (retired) Sampath Thuiyacontha said that the military parade will be limited to 1,873 personnel, reducing the number of participants by 1,511 compared to last year. Additionally, it has been decided not to include armoured vehicles from the Tri-Forces in this year’s parade.Last year, 19 aircraft were used for the Independence Day celebrations, whereas this year, only three aircraft will be deployed for the ceremonial display of the national flag in the sky. However, the traditional 25-gun salute by the Navy from a warship at noon will continue as part of the celebrations.Rs.80 million has been allocated for the ceremony which is much lower when compared to the Independence Day celebrations held in the past.
