Environment Minister Dr. Dhammika Patabendi has said an independent investigation will be conducted into the death of Kavanthissa, an elephant that recently received treatment.
Speaking to the media after an event in Kilinochchi, the Minister said the investigation would examine whether any mistakes were made during the elephant’s treatment or whether there had been any deliberate act intended to harm the animal.
He said the veterinary team had made every possible effort to treat the elephant but expressed regret that its life could not be saved.
The Minister added that the Environment Ministry would take steps to further improve the treatment of sick animals by veterinary services and the Department of Wildlife Conservation.
He said the investigation would also examine whether the elephant had been deliberately harmed without the authorities’ knowledge, adding that strict action would be taken if any wrongdoing was identified. (Newswire)
