Construction of a new Accident and Emergency Unit at Mannar District General Hospital commenced on September 16, with Rs. 600 million in grant assistance from the Government of India.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake attended the ceremony marking the commencement of construction and expressed his appreciation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian government for their contribution to the project.
The new unit will be equipped with modern medical facilities and is intended to expand emergency and specialised healthcare services available to residents of Mannar and surrounding areas.
According to the President, the facility will enable people in Mannar to receive emergency trauma care and other specialised medical services closer to home, reducing the need to travel to Colombo or other major cities for treatment.
The President described the project as an important step towards strengthening Sri Lanka’s free healthcare system at the regional level and improving access to healthcare services across the country.
He also thanked the institutions and other stakeholders involved in supporting the initiative.
The project is being financed through a grant from the Indian government, contributing to the expansion of healthcare infrastructure in Sri Lanka. (Newswire)
