The diplomatic rift between India and Canada intensified after Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly suggested that “everything is on the table,” including the possibility of sanctions against India. The tensions escalated following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s accusations on Monday that the Indian government was linked to the killing of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June last year, which Canada alleges involved Indian agents.
In response to the allegations, India expelled six Canadian diplomats on Monday and recalled its High Commissioner along with five other diplomats from Ottawa. Meanwhile, Canada maintained that the diplomats were expelled due to the ongoing investigation into the matter. India has firmly rejected the allegations, labeling them “absurd” and politically driven.
Joly hinted at the possibility of imposing sanctions against India following a diplomatic fallout over the killing of pro-Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Joly said, “everything is on the table,” signaling that further diplomatic measures may be considered
Trudeau alleged that Indian government agents were involved in Nijjar’s killing in June 2023. In contrast, Joly emphasized that the expulsion of Indian diplomats was based on evidence gathered by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
