Indian govt improving health and welfare of estate community

The Indian government is taking steps to provide assistance in improving the health, education and welfare facilities of the estate community in the Sabaragamuwa Province.

This was revealed during a special discussion held recently between the Sabaragamuwa Province Governor Champa Janaki Rajaratne and Assistant High Commissioner of India, V.S. Saranya, at the Governor’s Office in Ratnapura, on Wednesday (18).

At the discussions, attention was drawn to the health, education and welfare of the estate community in the Sabaragamuwa Province.

Indian universities and educational institutions have been providing scholarships to government employees in the Sabaragamuwa Province for many years in many fields, including administration, urban development, information technology, English, etc.

Under the Indian Housing Project houses are being constructed for the estate community in the Sabaragamuwa Province. The Indian Government has also built a library called ‘Indian Corner’ at the Central Library of the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council.

The library was inspected by the Assistant High Commissioner of India and she promised to donate Indian books related to various fields in the future.

The event was attended by Secretary to the Chief Ministry of the Sabaragamuwa Province Sujeewa Bodhimanna, Secretary to the Governor Darshana Samarasekera, the Assistant Secretary to the Governor Isuri Ratnayake, the Social Secretary of the Assistant High Commissioner of India Deepika Herath, among others.
