Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has warned that the world could face a major food crisis in the coming months, pointing to potential disruptions to grain exports, fertilizer shortages and the impact of a strong El Niño weather pattern.
Speaking on the emerging global challenges, Jaishankar said some major grain-exporting countries could face difficulties shipping their supplies, particularly through the Black Sea region, placing further pressure on global food availability.
He also highlighted growing concerns over fertilizer supplies, noting that key producers, including Russia and countries in the Middle East, have seen their production affected.
Jaishankar said these pressures could be compounded by a powerful El Niño, creating additional risks for global food production and supply.
He warned that the combination of pressures on energy, food, fertilizers and finance could create an increasingly stressful situation for countries around the world.
On the financial front, Jaishankar noted that conflicts generally prompt capital to move towards perceived safe-haven markets and away from more vulnerable parts of the global economy, adding further pressure on affected countries.
The Indian Foreign Minister also stressed that policymakers in major countries have a responsibility to consider the international consequences of their decisions, regardless of whether negative impacts on other nations were intentional.
He argued that governments should look beyond their own domestic considerations and assess how their policy decisions could affect countries elsewhere, particularly during periods of heightened global economic and geopolitical uncertainty. (Newswire)
