Inquiry into assault at Ridiyagama Safari Park

An investigation was launched yesterday in relation to the incident where the veterinarian who cares for the lioness named Dora at the Ridiyagama Safari Park was assaulted.

Wildlife State Ministry Secretary Somaratne Vidanapathirana said that legal action will be taken against those involved in such an attack, if indeed it did take place. A group of employees of the Ridiyagama Safari Park have assaulted Dr. Priyasad Ediriwarna, the veterinarian at the park. All veterinary officers of the Department of National Zoological Gardens have quit working for the second day in a row, from the 24th while reporting sick requesting the authorities to take immediate legal action in connection with the incident.National Zoological Gardens Director General Sharmila Rajapaksa was also on a field visit when the attack took place and the veterinarian who was injured in the assault is currently receiving treatment at the Hambantota General Hospital.Ediriwarna is a doctor who has been the talk of the town since he treated Dora the Lion cub born at the Ridiyagama Safari Park and all veterinarians have reported sick expressing their support for him and protesting against the assault.
