The government will provide Sri Lankan world champion Rumesh Tharanga with a new set of javelins after his equipment was damaged during his return flight to Sri Lanka, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports announced.
Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage has directed officials to expedite the purchase of a new set of international-standard javelins at government expense to ensure Tharanga’s preparations are not disrupted.
“Our government will continue to stand behind our athletics star and his Olympic dream,” the minister said.
The ministry said all five javelins belonging to Tharanga had been damaged during his journey from Budapest, Hungary.
The government is also considering seeking compensation from the airline over the damage, while looking into possible legal and diplomatic measures, according to the ministry.
Tharanga returned to Sri Lanka after winning the World Athletics Ultimate Championship and the Diamond League Final.
The ministry said it would continue to provide the necessary state support and facilities as Tharanga prepares for upcoming international competitions and targets the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. (Newswire)
