The National Health Research Conference 2023, organized by the Education, Training and Research Division of the Ministry of Health with the aim of promoting the health research sector in Sri Lanka, was successfully held the past two days Nov 13 and 14 at Water’s Edge, Battaramulla.
Health and Industries Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana participated as the chief guest at the concluding event of this national conference which was held for the third time. The main objective of this conference is to provide a platform for researchers working in the health sector to present and discuss research, as well as to orient and encourage health professionals in research.
Speaking here, the Minister of Health and Industry Dr. Ramesh Pathirana said that this conference can be introduced as a big step forward in the future journey of the health service in Sri Lanka and that the health professionals of Sri Lanka are working to provide the same health service to the people of Sri Lanka.
During the two-day conference, 245 oral and poster researches were discussed and 10 researches were recommended as the best researches. Out of that, three researches were selected as the best researches.
Those health professionals were given certificates by the Health and Industry Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana, and the best researches selected will be used for the future advancement of the health service.
Health professionals under the topics of maternal and child health, non-communicable diseases, health system, health and human resources, food and nutrition, infectious diseases, microbiology, surgical care, digital health, radiology, dental care and many more.
He pointed out that after the independence of 1948, free education and health are being implemented in Sri Lanka and the number of medical colleges which was one then has grown to 11, and the number of schools from 3,000 has grown to 7,000.
Previously, 701 registered doctors and a small number of nurses were engaged in the health service in the country and the capacity of hospital beds was 15,000. However at present, the capacity of the hospital beds is more than 90,000. He also emphasized that more than 10,000 people work in related professions in the health service.
He also said that although there has been some setback in the health service in this country in the past two years, by next year it will be a strong service once again and the best research selected here will be used for the future improvement of the health service. The Minister concluded by saying that international agencies including the World Bank, World Health Organization, JICA, Government of India, Government of China, Asian Development Bank, will provide support to provide quality and advanced healthcare in this country and the final benefit will go to the people of this country.
On this occasion, Professor Amrik Sohal of international fame (Prof. Amrik Sohal- Australia), Additional Secretary (Medical Services) of the Ministry of Health Dr. Sunil De Alwis, Deputy Director General (Education Training and Research) Dr. Samindhi Samarakoon, Deputy Director Generals of the Ministry, Directors of Education Training and Research Department, Neogen Doctors of Hospitals and Health Institutions participated.
