A 54-year-old Sri Lankan wanted under an Interpol Red Notice, who had escaped custody in both India and Sri Lanka, has been arrested while hiding in a rented house in Wadduwa, police said.
The Angulana resident was initially arrested by the Indian Navy while allegedly transporting 337 kilograms of heroin to India by sea. Police said he was imprisoned in Kochi, India, but escaped and returned to Sri Lanka by sea.
After returning, he was arrested in Wennappuwa and produced before the Marawila Magistrate’s Court. He was remanded and later released on bail. Police said he subsequently escaped from the custody of prison officers while appearing in court in connection with the case.
Officers of the Mount Lavinia Divisional Crime Investigation Bureau arrested him in Wadduwa in the early hours of September 30.
Police said steps are being taken under extradition laws to hand the suspect over to Indian authorities. (Newswire)
