The Intertropical Convergence Zone (where winds from the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere converge) is affecting the island’s weather, the Meteorology Department said.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at most places in the island during the afternoon or night. Heavy showers above 100 mm are likely in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva and Eastern Provinces and in the Galle, Matara and Puttalam districts.
Showers or thundershowers will occur in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North Western Provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts during the morning too.
The sea areas around the island can be slight to moderate. The sea areas off the coasts extending from Mannar to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle can be fairly rough.
Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
Meanwhile the National Building Reasearch Organisation (NBRO) issued landslide warnings for several areas in four districts.
The landslide warnings were issued for Niyagama, Nagoda and Elpitiya DS divisions in Galle district and Walallawita, Horana, Mathugama, Dodangoda and Bulathsinhala DS divisions in Kalutara district. Also landslide warmings were issued for Dehiowita DS division in Kegalle district and Pitabeddera and Akuressa DS divisions in the Matara district.
Meanwhile, Matugama had recieved 126.0 mm of rain, Horana 100.5 mm of rain, Udupussellawa in Nuwara Eliya 78.0 mm of rain, Yakkalamulla in Galle 76.5 mm, Walallavita in Kalutara 64.0 mm and Neluwa (Galle) 50.0 mm.
