Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said a memorandum of understanding with the United States aimed at ending the conflict is closer than ever, while urging media outlets to refrain from speculating on the agreement until it is finalised.
His remarks came after U.S. President Donald Trump shared Araghchi’s statement on Truth Social, having earlier criticised reports in Iranian state media that allegedly revealed details of the proposed agreement, dismissing them as “fake news”.
Araghchi has sought to build public support for the memorandum, presenting it as a diplomatic success for Iran. However, he declined to disclose specific details of the negotiations.
The proposed agreement is currently under consideration by Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and Supreme Leader, indicating that discussions have reached an advanced stage.
While describing the latest developments as a positive sign, Araghchi acknowledged that significant challenges remain before a final deal can be reached.
He said preliminary understandings had been reached on issues such as the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s frozen assets. However, disagreements persist over the nuclear file and the removal of sanctions, which continue to be key sticking points in the negotiations.
According to Araghchi, both sides are considering a 60-day period of further talks aimed at resolving outstanding issues and ensuring any agreement delivers lasting peace.
