The Ministry of Defence says that arrangements have been made today (13) to send to Iran the bodies of 84 Iranian sailors who died on the ship IRIS DENA, which was attacked by the United States in the southern seas of Sri Lanka.
The Ministry stated that a special aircraft carrying the bodies is scheduled to depart today (13) from Mattala International Airport bound for Iran.
The repatriation of the deceased sailors’ bodies is being carried out under the coordination of the Iranian Embassy in Sri Lanka.
Earlier this month, an Iranian Navy ship had met with an accident about 40 nautical miles off the Galle Port, with around 180 people on board.
35 of the Iranian sailors who were rescued were admitted to Karapitiya Hospital, while 84 bodies were recovered.
Following the incident, U.S. Defence Secretary Peter Hegseth confirmed that the Iranian ship had been sunk in international waters using a torpedo fired from an American submarine. (Newswire)
