Iron ball, lead found inside Seetha’s body in second surgery

A team of doctors, including Senior Professor Ashoka Dangolla of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Peradeniya, operated on the injured female Elephant Seetha and an iron ball with a diameter

of 6 mm and several pieces of lead were found inside her body.

This is the second surgery that she underwent after being shot at while arriving to attend the Mahiyangana Perehera.

Prof. Dangolla said that the iron ball was within about 3 cm from the place where the bullet entered the elephant’s body. He said that if this iron ball had moved further inside, it would have damaged the lungs and heart and doubts arise as to whether there are more such iron balls in the chest cavity or lungs. The professor also said that special attention will be paid to prevent the animal from becoming weak. It has now been revealed that the statement made by the officials of the wildlife conservation department that they had shot the elephant using rubber bullets is false, elephant’s owner S.M Roshan said.
