Isiri Meegammana to lead Mahamaya Girls cricket team

Sixteen year old Isiri Meegammana, a Grade thirteen student of Mahamaya Girls School,Kandy has been appointed as the Captain of the School Cricket team for the third successive year. She led the team as the youngest Cricket Captain of the School at the Girls Cricket Tournament organized by the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association in the year 2019.

Isiri is a left arm medium pace bowler and a right hand top order batswoman. She started her cricket career at the age of Twelve years under the coaching of the writer, who has been coaching the Mahamaya Girls cricket team for the last thirty six years .

At the start of her cricket career Isiri showed her class as a bowler to claim three wickets for Twenty Five runs against Gothami Balika Vidyalaya.Kandy at the Kandy District Tournament organized by the Dept. of Education,Kandy. In 2018 she showed her ability as a batswoman to score 30 runs against St.Anthonys’ Girls School at the Kandy District Girls Schools cricket tournament. At the All Island Girls cricket Tournament she performed a good double to score 35 runs and claim three wickets for 25 runs against Dehiattakandiya Central School, in the same year. she performed a fine bowling feat in a Ladies cricket match against Palinks cricket Club, Colombo to claim three wickets for 30 runs to win the ‘Best Bowlers’ award.

In the following year too her team played against the same Club and she claimed five wickets for thirty five runs in the particular match. Isiri led the Mahamaya Girls cricket team to become one of the ‘Best teams’ in the Island in the year 2018 but the school team could not participate at the all Island cricket tournament held in 2019 due to unavoidable circumstances. As a Cricketer she was selected to the Kandy District girls cricket team under the coaching of Amila Pinnaduwa,the Provincial cricket coach attached to Sri Lanka cricket.

Isiri is a member of the School Under 15 Netball team under the coaching of Indu Ranasinghe, a talented Athlete who is a teacher in the School. Isiri is a bright student who has got 9 ‘A’s at the G.C.E.(O/L) examination.
