Cabinet Spokesman, Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana said that the Cabinet approved the implementation of the IT Strategic Plan for the Inland Revenue Department.
The minister stated this at the press conference held at the Government Information Department yesterday (10) to announce Cabinet decisions.
He said that an IT strategic plan to help digitize the Inland Revenue Department as a structural measure under the Extensive Credit Facility Programme of the International Monetary Fund, needed to be prepared by the Inland Revenue Department and approved by the Cabinet of Ministers by the end of August 2024.
The Minister said that the proposal presented by President Ranil Wickremesinghe as Finance, Economic Stabilization and National Policy Minister to implement the IT Strategic Plan for the Inland Revenue
Department prepared for 2025 to 2027 was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
The Minister further said:We have been given future goals according to the extensive credit facilities of the International Monetary Fund. Accordingly, it is mandatory to maintain the government’s income as a percentage of the gross domestic product at a level of 15 percent or more. There, the Inland Revenue Department, Customs and Excise Departments will integrate revenue-generating institutions and it will be easier to reach a higher revenue target through digitization. For that, there are conditions set down by the IMF that the necessary measures for digitization must be taken by closing the empty spaces or voids in the income generation channels. The digitization proposal was approved in order to fulfill those conditions.
