Jailed couple’s daughter held over extorting money in Matara

A 20-year-old girl has been arrested by the officers of the Tangalle Division Criminal Investigation Bureau, who conducted an investigation regarding a case of calling a businessman,

threatening him with death and demanding one million rupees as extortion money.

The Tangalle Division Crimes Investigation Bureau stated that she was arrested day before yesterday (21). She is a resident of Mirissa, Polathumodera.

Police said that the young woman’s father had been convicted of a crime and is serving a prison sentence in the Matara prison, while her mother is also being held in same prison for a heroin offence.

The businessman had complained to the Tangalle Police when he was continuously threatened, asking for one million rupees. The businessman had also provided Police with a bank account number in which the money was asked to be deposited.

Paying special attention to the phone number from which the threatening call had originated and the bank account number that had been given, it had been revealed that the phone call had been made by a prisoner serving a prison sentence in Matara Prison. When the owner of the account number was inquired into, it was revealed that it is an account in a bank branch in Weligama. The investigation had also revealed that the account belonged to a woman. It had been revealed further that the woman is also incarcerated in Matara Prison in connection with a drug case.

Further investigation had revealed that she is the wife of the prisoner who called regarding the money.

The investigation has revealed that even though the woman is in jail, money is being credited to her bank account and it is being taken by someone using an ATM card related to the bank account.

The officers of the Tangalle Division Criminal Investigation Bureau, who discovered during the investigation that money is being withdrawn from the card, had conducted an investigation to find out who was withdrawing money this way. It had been revealed that the daughter of this couple was withdrawing money using an ATM card. A top-ranking Police officer said that she was arrested accordingly.
