Jana Aragala Movement stages Colombo protest over tax policies

The Jana Aragala Movement (People’s Struggle) held a protest march in Colombo on Saturday (Oct. 3), calling for the withdrawal of what it described as unfair taxes and a reduction in the cost-of-living burden.

The march began near Campbell Place in Borella at about 1:30 p.m. and proceeded through Borella toward Colombo Fort Railway Station.

Speaking during the protest, Jana Aragala Movement National Executive Council member Wasantha Mudalige criticized the government’s tax policies, saying they had increased the financial pressure on ordinary households.

Mudalige also raised concerns about food affordability, child malnutrition and taxes on essential goods and sanitary products. He criticized the economic policies of successive governments and said his organization would continue campaigning against the current tax policies.

He also called on the public to participate in further protests ahead of the next national budget, which he said could increase the tax burden on the public. (Newswire)
