Japanese Graduates’ Alumni Association of Sri Lanka feted

The Japanese Graduates’ Alumni Association of Sri Lanka (JAGAAS) was honoured with the Foreign Minister’s Commendation by Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, Mizukoshi Hideaki, in recognition of the association’s remarkable contributions to strengthening the ties between Japan and Sri Lanka, particularly in the areas of education, culture, and professional exchange.
The commendation was conferred during a reception held at the Official Residence of the Japan’s Ambassador. President of JAGAAS, Dr. Sunil Nawarathne accepted the award on behalf of the association, which has been actively promoting bilateral relations since its founding in 1993. Composed of alumni who have pursued higher education in Japan, JAGAAS functions as a ‘Think Tank’ of expertise in various fields, including science, arts, and management.
Ambassador Mizukoshi praised JAGAAS’s efforts, extending his heartfelt congratulations on behalf of Japan’s Foreign Affairs Minister and the people of Japan. He highlighted the association’s significant contributions in fostering mutual understanding between the two nations.
Some of JAGAAS’s notable initiatives include:
• Japanese Education Seminar: Held in partnership with the Embassy of Japan and the Japan International Cooperation Center (JICE), this annual event introduces countless Sri Lankan students and professionals to opportunities for higher education and cultural exchange in Japan.
• Bon Odori Festival: Since its introduction in 1993, this event has become one of Colombo’s most cherished cultural celebrations, allowing Sri Lankans to experience the vibrant spirit of Japanese summer traditions.
• Commemorative Publications: JAGAAS has marked the 50th, 60th and 70th anniversaries of Sri Lanka-Japan diplomatic relations with scholarly publications, enriching academic dialogue and highlighting the historical ties between the two nations.
• Seminars and Workshops: JAGAAS has shared Japanese expertise in agriculture, nutrition, and fish processing, contributing to Sri Lanka’s innovation and growth in these sectors.
• Specialised Skilled Worker (SSW) Programme: JAGAAS played a pivotal role in raising awareness about this programme, which facilitates Sri Lankan skilled workers’ engagement with the Japanese workforce.
• Initiating the creation of a Japanese language programme ‘Yokoso Nihon-e’ on Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation.
• Establishing the JAGAAS Award to recognise outstanding Japanese nationals/organisations and Sri Lankan Alumni members for their contribution to Sri Lanka’s development.
This commendation symbolises the invaluable dedication JAGAAS has shown in strengthening the bond of friendship and cooperation between Japan and Sri Lanka.
The Foreign Minister’s Commendations are awarded to individuals and groups for their outstanding achievements in the international field to acknowledge their contribution to the promotion of friendship between Japan and foreign countries.
