Jaswar Umar, former President, has been elected as the new President of the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) following a secret ballot held at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute in Colombo. Umar secured a resounding victory with 45 votes, while his rival candidate Dacshitha Sumathipala received 20 votes.
Umar’s tenure as FFSL President will extend for four years, concluding on September 29, 2027. Out of 67 leagues, he garnered more than half of the votes, with notable absence from the Kilinochchi Football League and Sri Lanka Police Football League.
A Royal College alumnus, Umar had previously served as FFSL President starting in July 2021. Before his presidency, he held the position of General Secretary within the organization. Umar’s extensive experience also includes his tenure as a senior football referee and match commissioner at FIFA.
Jaswar Umar received crucial support from former FFSL President Ranjith Rodrigo and Dr. Manil Fernando, who was his rival in the 2021 election and was subsequently elected as Vice President alongside Rodrigo. These endorsements played a significant role in securing his victory.
