A seven-year-old girl who was sleeping in a house at Horana Gonapola had been taken hostage by the boy friend of her father’s sister.
The suspect had threatened to kill her and kidnapped her in the early hours of Monday (13).
The girl who was taken hostage was found by the Police after being left in a relative’s house in Patikirideniya, Kesbewa.
Police investigations revealed that the suspect had been in a relationship with the her father’s sister for about ten years and the girl had stopped the relationship two months ago due to his severe drug addiction. On Monday morning (13) at around 6.20 am, the suspect who had come in a car to the house at Gonapola Atambahena with another person, had got out of the car, broken into the house and searched for his girlfriend. However, she had already left the house to go to her workplace.
Then he had approached the 7-year-old girl, his girlfriend’s brother’s elder daughter who had been sleeping in the same bed with her younger sister and kidnapped her and fled in the car, according to the Moragahahena Police.
At that time, the girl’s father had gone to work and her mother had been in the bathroom.
A Police officer said that when the grandmother saw this and screamed, the mother had come out of the bathroom and chased after the suspect, who had got into the parked car and fled with the kidnapped child.
Chief Inspector Thusitha Wickremaratne, who came to know that a girl had been kidnapped and had been taken away in a car, he went to the house and started preliminary investigations and managed to uncover information about the suspect.
To convince his girlfriend that he had the child in his custody, the suspect had forwarded a photograph to the displeased girlfriend who was going to work to Colombo, through WhatsApp technology and threatened to kill the child if she did not come to him. Then after the girlfriend had arrived, he had taken the abducted girl to Kesbewa and dropped off the child at the house of a relative of the girlfriend in Patikirideniya, Kesbewa and fled with this girlfriend.
After the young woman had sent the photo of her ex-boyfriend holding the child, which the suspect had sent to the young woman through WhatsApp technology, to her brother’s wife (sister-in-law), she had forwarded it to the Officer-In-Charge of the Moragahahena Police to speed up the investigation and bring the child back safely.Police said that it has been revealed as of now that the car the suspect used to kidnap the girl and the young woman was registered in the name of a woman in Baddegama area.
A special Police team has been deployed to arrest the suspect and his accomplice.
