The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) is a party that has always fought for the people’s right to vote, SLPP General Secretary MP Sagara Kariyawasam said.
Speaking at a press conference at the SLPP Headquarters yesterday, the MP said that the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has no moral right to demand for an election.
He said that the SLPP-led Governments had conducted timely elections.
“There was a Parliamentary debate last week over the postponement of elections. In that, the SLPP clearly expressed the view that elections should be held soon. We strongly demanded for the Local Government Elections,” he said.
“The Provincial Council Elections have also been delayed due to a new legislation to change the electoral system. It was enacted in 2017 with the support of the JVP. Therefore, the JVP has no right to demand for elections,” he added.
