Kandy returns only Anuradha Jayaratne, Rauf Hakeem; welcomes female newcomers in lawyers Thushari Jayasinghe (NPP), Chamindraini Kiriella (SJB)

Eight MPs who represented the Kandy District in the last Parliament have been defeated in this year’s General Election.

The former MPs who failed to get re-elected are Tissa Attanayake, Wasantha Yapa Bandara and A.H.M. Haleem from the SJB, Dilum Amunugama from the Sarvajana Balaya, Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Velu Kumar and Udayana Kirindigoda from the NDF and Ranjith Bandara from the SLPP.

Lakshman Kiriella, Lohan Ratwatte, Gunathilaka Rajapakse, Keheliya Rambukwella and Mayantha Dissanayake, who represented the Kandy District in the last Parliament, did not contest in this General Election.

Hence, 13 MPs who represented the Kandy District in the last Parliament, will not be around this time.

Of the 12 MPs elected to Parliament from the Kandy District, 9 are newcomers.

Before this, only NPP’s KD Lalkantha, NDF’s Anuradha Jayaratne and SJB’s Rauf Hakeem have represented the Kandy District in Parliament.

It is noteworthy that, after 21 years, women are representing the Kandy District in Parliament.

Lawyers Thushari Jayasinghe of the NPP and Chamindraini Kiriella of the SJB are the women who have won Parliamentary seats from the Kandy District this year.

The last time a woman represented the Kandy District in Parliament was in 2001, when Chitra Manthilaka was elected.  Among the former MPs who represented the Kandy District in the last Parliament, only Anuradha Jayaratne and Rauf Hakeem have retained their seats this time around.
