Kawanthissa, the injured tusker roaming the Siyambalangamuwa area, received another round of antibiotic injections today (Sept. 26), as treatment continued for a third consecutive day, wildlife officials said.
Officials from the Department of Wildlife Conservation said the elephant had sustained injuries from gunshot wounds and a tusk attack by another elephant.
Wildlife veterinary surgeon Dr. Isuru Hewakottage and other wildlife officials are continuing to treat the tusker while closely monitoring its condition and behavior.
Kawanthissa is considered one of Sri Lanka’s largest living tuskers. The elephant also received treatment last year after sustaining gunshot wounds.
An X-ray examination is scheduled to assess the condition of the bones around the injured areas, the Wildlife Department said. (Newswire)
