Kegalu Vidyalaya – Kegalle Student Parliament was held on July 04, 2024 at the Presidential Secretariat Conference Hall. Secretary to the President Saman Ekanayake, also participated in this programme which was jointly organised by the Communications Department of the Parliament of Sri Lanka along with the Presidential Secretariat.
Addressing the audience, Ekanayake expressed his delight regarding the youth participation in understanding the parliament system. Furthermore, the Presidential Secretary highlighted the importance of being educated and having a good understanding in politics when entering into the political arena.
Secretary General of Parliament Kushani Rohanadeera explaining the functions of Parliament stated that the future generation should resolve to strengthen democracy. She further recalled that the Kegalu Vidyalaya – Kegalle was the first school to connect with the student parliament outreach initiative via online. Kushani Rohanadeera invited all the young students to be educated about the parliamentary system and share this knowledge with everyone for the purpose of creating a politically informed community.
Deputy Principal of Kegalu Vidyalaya – Kegalle W. A. Herath, said that it was a great opportunity for the children to hold this debate at the Presidential Secretariat, a legislative building that sheltered many important decisions in Sri Lankan history.
Certificates were awarded to the members of the Kegalu Vidyalaya – Kegalle Student Parliament as well as to the children who participated in the event.
Major Nadeeka Dangolla, Assistant Director of the Presidential Secretariat, Budhini Ramanayake, Public Outreach Manager, Duminda Wickramasinghe, Yasry Mohomed and Jaya Prakash, Public Outreach Coordinator of the Communications Department of the Parliament of Sri Lanka were also present on this occasion.
