Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said that a complete investigation will be conducted into the incident where drugs purchased with people’s tax money had to be thrown away.
He said that only 13 percent of the 14.5 million Pfizer vaccines purchased in 2022 for the control of Covid-19 had been used and the rest of them had to be destroyed due to expiration.
The Minister said this while addressing the media in Kandy.
The required amount of medicines given for respiratory diseases including colds is calculated and related orders are made annually.
However, the number of patients coming to get treatment for respiratory diseases has decreased significantly in 2022 as a result of following health habits such as wearing face masks and washing hands during the Covid-19 period. Therefore, he said that 80 percent of the ordered medicines had to be thrown away as they were not used due to this reason.
