Kurundumale tense after gathering of two groups

Tense situation erupted at the Kurundumale temple premises in Mullaitivu yesterday when a group of Hindu devotees residing in the area came there to conduct a Pongal pooja.

The Hindu devotees had earlier announced their plans to conduct a pooja at a place near the temple where they said ancient kovil was.

Buddhist monks and devotees started coming to the temple premises from Thursday. A large contingent of Police personnel had been deployed in the area to prevent clash between the Buddhist and Hindu devotees.

The Buddhist monks who came from the south held a Ashirvada pooja together with a large number of devotees at the Kurundumale temple. Hindu devotees said that it was difficult to hold the Pongal pooja at the place while the Buddhist pooja was going on. However both parties managed to conduct their religious activities separately with the intervention of the Police.
