Sri Lanka Cricket and head coach Sanath Jayasuriya have reportedly requested fast bowling great Lasith Malinga to extend his short-term stint with the national team so he can be part of the support staff for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Malinga was appointed consultant fast bowling coach on a one-month contract from Dec. 15, 2025, to Jan. 25, 2026, as part of Sri Lanka’s World Cup preparations. His current term is due to end on Jan. 25, with no final decision yet announced on an extension.
Even before joining the coaching setup physically, Malinga had been advising the team remotely and supporting match preparations, with Sri Lanka’s think tank reportedly keen to retain his services. Sri Lanka Cricket is also understood to be in favour of an extension.
Malinga is regarded as a key tactical figure in T20 cricket, with extensive experience mentoring bowlers and working in franchise leagues such as the Indian Premier League. He is widely known for his expertise in death bowling, match-ups and modern T20 strategy.
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, co-hosted by Sri Lanka and India, will begin on Feb. 7, 2026. (Newswire)
