The first consignment of the latest saline product produced locally under the logo of the State Pharmaceuticals Manufacturing Corporation (SPMC) was officially released to the local market by State Minister of Production, Supply and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals Prof. Channa Jayasumana at the SPMC premises at Ratmalana.
The decision taken by the Kelun Life Sciences (Pvt) Ltd to start its saline production in Sri Lanka is a great achievement by the country and the Cabinet of Ministers has given its full authority to the SPMC to market the saline.
Saline, a mixture of Sodium Chloride (Salt) and water and has a number of uses in medicine. It is used to clean wounds, remove and store contact lenses and help with dry eyes. By injection into a vein, it is used to treat dehydration.
State Minister Channa Jayasumana said the annual saline requirement of the country is around 26 million bottles of 500 ml and the local production plant has so far been able to produce 28 percent of this total requirement.
