Magistrate Gamage visits CID office to observe detainees
A lawyer filing a motion on behalf of drug dealer Salindu Malshika Gunaratne alias Kudu Salindu, in Criminal Investigation Department custody requested Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage to issue an order directing the CID to provide milk powder, ginger biscuits, instant noodles and sanitary items to Gunaratne.
The Magistrate questioned Criminal Investigation Department whether they are providing food and drinks including milk to the suspect.
The CID informed that necessary food including milk tea is being provided to the suspect from the canteen. The Magistrate ordered the Criminal Investigation Department to inform the OIC of the Public Complaints Department of the CID and take necessary instructions.
The Magistrate informed that an appropriate order will be issued after obtaining the relevant instructions.
Counsel informed the Magistrate that lawyers are only given 20 minutes to talk to her client, Gunaratne and pointed out under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, half an hour can be given for lawyers to to talk to their clients in custody.
The lawyer told the Magistrate that his client had received threats from Police officers and since there are two Police officers on both sides when talking to the client it has been difficult to obtain more information in this regard.
Magistrate Thilina Gamage said that he will make an inquiry and give the necessary orders.
Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage went to the Criminal Investigation Department at around 1.45 pm yesterday to observe the conditions provided to Harak Kata and Salindu and the Magistrate was at the CID for almost an hour.
