Lawyers kept Kotelawala under house arrest: Golden Key depositors

The Golden Key Depositors’ Association Chairman complained to the Supreme Court yesterday (9) that Ceylinco Group Chairman Lalith Kotelawala was kept under house arrest by a group of lawyers before his death.

Golden Key Depositors’ Association Chairman Jude Marco Perera who personally appeared in Court when a group of depositors filed a motion regarding the non-payment of the money or the related interest as ordered by the Supreme Court in the Golden Key Credit Card Company, stated this.

The motion and the related petition were called before the Supreme Court Bench of Justices S.Thurairaja, Achala Wengappuli and Priyantha Fernando.

Perera stated that it was known that Lalith Kotalawala, the head of Ceylinco Group, was kept in his house by a group of lawyers before his death. He said that he wanted to present facts to court regarding that and the non-payment of deposit money.

Bench Chairman Justice S.Thurairaja, pointed out that there is no opportunity for anyone to appear before the Supreme Court at any time and that prior permission must be obtained for that. The judge asked whether he had obtained permission to appear as an intermediate party.

He mentioned that such permission has not been obtained. So, the Bench advised him to present facts after filing a motion.

Earlier, several parties had filed Fundamental Rights petitions in the Supreme Court, complaining that the depositors who have deposited more than one million rupees of money in the Golden Key Company, a subsidiary of the Ceylinco Group, did not receive their deposits and the related interest. The Supreme Court, which conducted a hearing on one of its petitions, had earlier directed the relevant authorities to pay 41 per cent of their deposits to those who had deposited more than one million rupees in the company. However, the relevant motion was filed complaining that the payments or any related actions have not been done.

After considering the facts, the Bench asked the parties to hold a discussion with the Attorney General regarding the related payments. After holding the discussion, all parties were directed to inform the Supreme Court if a settlement could be reached.

The petition was scheduled to be called on May 8 next year for further consideration. President’s Counsel Anil Silva and others appeared on behalf of the Golden Key depositors.
