The Election Commission stated that legal action will be initiated against all the candidates who failed to submit their income and expenditure reports in relation to the 2024 General Election.
The Election Commission has informed all the District Election Offices to complete the files regarding the candidates who have not submitted their income and expenditure reports in relation to the recently concluded General Election.
These completed files of the candidates who have not submitted their income and expenditure reports have been instructed by the Election Commission to the District Election Offices to submit to the Police as soon as possible to take legal action against them in a statement released yesterday (7).
This decision to take legal action against these candidates has been taken by the Election Commission after a group of candidates failed to submit their income and expenditure reports for the 2024 General Election up to now even though the time given for submitting them has lapsed.
The Election Commission stated that the necessary legal action that is required to be taken is currently being prepared against the candidates who failed to submit their income and expenditure reports.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission stated that steps have been taken to file cases in Court next week against five Presidential election candidates who have not submitted their income and expenditure reports as required by the Act.
Cases have been already filed in Court against seven Presidential candidates who have not submitted their income and expenditure reports.
According to the Election Expenditure Regulation Act, all candidates contesting elections directly through political parties, independent groups and listed in the National lists are required to submit their income and expenditure reports by the set deadlines to the Election Commission offices placed in their relevant districts and the Election Commission is empowered by the Act to take legal action against all the candidates who failed to submit their income and expenditure reports before the set deadline expired.
