A fully grown leopard cub that had entered a house in the Dedugala area of Bulathkohupitiya has been rescued unharmed, wildlife officials said.
Wildlife officers attached to the Bulathkohupitiya office responded to information received on Tuesday (15) that a leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya) had entered a house in the area and took steps to rescue the animal under veterinary guidance.
After rescuing the leopard from the premises, wildlife officers attempted to reunite it with its mother, but the effort was unsuccessful.
The animal was subsequently taken to the Randenigala Wildlife Health Management Unit on Wednesday (16).
Wildlife officers and veterinary personnel are currently providing the necessary treatment and making arrangements to release the leopard into a suitable environment.
The leopard is a strictly protected mammal under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance and is classified as a species facing the threat of extinction.
Wildlife authorities advised the public to immediately leave the area and inform the nearest wildlife office or the Wildlife Emergency Hotline 1992 if they encounter a leopard caught in a snare or trapped in any location. (Newswire)
