She was speaking at the NPP’s public rally in Monaragala on November 4.
Chathuri Gangani said, “In world politics, the history of our country is written in golden letters; a victory was achieved at the last Presidential Election. We have elected a leader who feels the heartbeat of the people of this country to the Presidency. In that victory, the women living in this district and this country have fulfilled their duty correctly. Women have come forward for the victory of the Presidential Election as well as for the triumph of the General Election. Only the National People’s Power was able to organise women politically in South Asia.
“There was a situation where our daughter, grandmother and mother couldn’t live in the country without suspicion or fear. The Monaragala district has the highest recorded number of child abuse cases. There has been a lot of abuse and rape. We have not yet created a safe country where we can live with dignity. Therefore, we women have the responsibility to come together and create a better country. In factories, garment factories, any other place of work, and the farm and field, we work hard to earn a living for our children. How much do women suffer in Sevanagala, Pelwatte and Ethimale sugar factories?
“Venomous vipers even attack sugarcane cutters with their venom-filled fangs.
Our swollen feet cry in pain, drilled by sharp thorns
Dripping our pitiful blood – but we have to cut the sugarcane.”
This poem tells about the pains we go through to find life for our children in the midst of poisonous snakes in sugarcane plantations. We have a duty and responsibility to build a country and a tomorrow for our children. How tragic are the lives of women who fulfil that duty and obligation? We have achieved one victory to change this situation. To confirm that victory, we request that we take action to build a strong future for our children on November 14.”
