Sri Lanka’s Ambassador Kana Kananathan met Liberian President Joseph Boakai at the Executive Mansion in Monrovia on Tuesday. The meeting marks the first historic bilateral engagement undertaken by a Sri Lankan diplomat in Liberia emphasising enhanced cooperation in political, trade and investment exchanges.
President Boakai underscored the importance of this historic meeting, celebrating 15 years of diplomatic ties between Liberia and Sri Lanka. He commended President Ranil Wickremesinghe for his swift and effective measures in stabilising Sri Lanka’s economy following the 2022 crisis. President Boakai praised Wickremesinghe’s leadership and strategic initiatives, which have been crucial in steering the country toward recovery and restoring public confidence. He further said President Wickremesinghe’s actions serve as a commendable example for nations facing similar challenges.
Kananathan reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing economic cooperation, promoting trade and investment and people to people contact between Sri Lanka and Liberia.
This interaction aimed to strengthen the bonds of friendship and collaboration between Sri Lanka and Africa. Both President Boakai and Ambassador Kananathan agreed to work together to build mutual trust and cooperation.
President Boakai recalled the invitation extended to Ambassador Kananathan by the Liberian Government as an election observer for the Presidential Elections in October 2023, and remarked that such involvements strengthen the ties between the two countries.
