Local companies to produce Single Super Phosphate fertiliser

Single Super Phosphate (SSP) fertilizer production has been started in Sri Lanka as a substitute for Triple Super Fertilizer (TSP) which is used to obtain phosphorus required for paddy cultivation and other crop cultivation.

The single super phosphate produced by using Eppawala Rock Phosphate is very suitable for rice and other crops and can be used as a substitute for Triple Super Fertilizer (TSP) which is currently imported to our country.

The annual cost of importing Triple Super Fertilizer to Sri Lanka is about Rs. three billion. Most of these fertilizers are produced in the countries under the Russian Federation, and due to the current war between Ukraine and Russia, there are problems in importing Triple Super Fertilizer. Therefore, by producing this single superphosphate in this country, the country will be able to save Rs. three billion.

Government took steps to provide free TSP in the last Yala Season. Currently, another stock of that fertilizer is with the Government-owned fertilizer companies and farmers also have some amount of fertilizer.

Four local companies have taken the necessary steps to produce Single Super Phosphate and the representatives of those companies met Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera on Friday (6) at the Agriculture Ministry.

The amount of Triple Super Fertilizer or TSP fertilizer required in this country is about 65,000 metric tons. Fertilizer manufacturing companies have the capacity to produce this required amount and currently have nearly 4,000 metric tons of Single Super Phosphate fertilizer in stock.

However, the company representatives said that they are able to produce the single super phosphate that the country needs. Minister Amaraweera, who expressed his opinion, said that under the full supervision of the Agriculture Department, the fertilizer can be produced and distributed by Lanka Fertilizer Company and Commercial Fertilizer Companies.

Agriculture Ministry Secretary Gunadasa Samarasinghe, Chairman of the two Government-owned fertilizer companies Dr. Jagath Perera, and National Fertilizer Secretariat Director Chandana Lokuheva, also participated.
