Health Deputy Director General and Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital Director Dr. G. Wijesuriya told Daily News yesterday (18) that the tests of the child patients transferred from Karapitiya Hospital would be carried out with the assistance of specialist doctors.
He stated that due to the shortage of specialist doctors in the blood transfusion and pediatric heart catheterization units of the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, certain tests required by the children cannot be performed at that hospital and the children are referred to Lady Ridgeway Hospital for the tests.
One of the two specialist doctors who worked at the Karapitiya Pediatric Cardiac Catheterisation Unit is abroad and the other doctor is on training. Dr. Wijesuriya said that the trained doctors are currently carrying out the treatment in the unit and in case of emergency, the children are referred from Karapitiya to the Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital in Colombo.
