Maid allegedly steals jewellery, cash worth over Rs. 1 Mn

The Cinnamon Gardens Police arrested a housemaid and a businessman in connection with the theft of over Rs.1.1 million from a house in the Trillium apartment complex located in Torrington, Colombo 7.

Police said that the suspected maid is a resident of Malsiripura and the businessman who helped her is a resident of Weligama. Police said that the maid stole a gold necklace weighing more than four pounds, two rings, three pairs of earrings, part of a necklace, a watch, US$ 460 and a mobile phone. The value of the stolen property is estimated at Rs. 682,500.

These suspects also stole the property of another maid who works in this house. The police said that a necklace with a gold pendant weighing more than two pounds and a ring belonging to the other maid have also been stolen. In the complaint made by the maid to the police, it is stated that the property is worth Rs.467, 000.

Both these thefts took place between 4:00 pm on November 9 and 3:00 pm on November 10. Only the arrested maid was in the house during this time. According to the information revealed during the questioning of the arrested suspects, the police were able to find a part of the stolen property.
