The Madurankuliya Police arrested after much effort, a suspect who brutally cut his three-year- old child while holding the child hostage to escape from the police on Tuesday.
Police said that a 28-year-old suspect residing in Madurankuliya Jinna Watte has been arrested. On the afternoon of the 18, the Madurankuliya Police had received information that the suspect, who resides in a house in Jinna Watte, Madurankuliya, was assaulting his mistress and two officers had gone there to arrest and bring the suspect back to the Police Station when a heated situation had arisen.
It is said that the suspect’s relatives had arranged for the suspect who was in police custody to escape by obstructing the duty of the Police officers. However, due to the heated situation at the place, the two Police officers had left and gone back to the Police Station empty handed.
Later, the suspect’s father and two relatives who obstructed the police duty were arrested by the police officers. Subsequently, a team including the Officer-In-Charge of the Madurankuliya
Police Station, Inspector Gamini Wickramasinghe had come to the Jinna Watte area to arrest the suspect. The suspect seeing this, had taken his three-year-old child hostage and demanded the release of his father and his three relatives who were arrested by the Police, and threatened that otherwise the child would be killed.
The suspect had taken a knife that he had in his hand and caused injuries to the child’s back even by then and had threatened the Police again that he would kill the child by putting the knife to the child’s neck.
At the same time, the Police had disarmed themselves by putting away all the weapons they had in their hands for the protection of the child. However, the suspect had been waving the sharp knife in his hand this way and that way to prevent anyone from approaching him.
At that time, a relative of the suspect had rushed to the suspect and overthrown him, and the Police acted immediately and arrested the suspect.
The three-year-old child, who had already received cut injuries, was immediately sent to the Puttalam Base Hospital for treatment.
