Matara St. Thomas College won the 19th “Battle of the Golden Pennants” football match between Matara St. Thomas College and Matara Rahula College with 4-2 penalty shoot out.
In the match held at the Matara Uyanwatta Football Stadium last (01), both sides could not score any goals at the end of the full time and it was decided to choose the winners of the match by penalty kicks. Accordingly, Matara St. Thomas College managed to win the match with 4-2 goals.
The Golden Pennants football match, which was started in 2002, did not take place in 2019, 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19.
Rahula College was the host school of this year’s football match and under the guidance of Rahul Principal Samitha Kurukulasuriya and St. Thomas Principal P. A. Weerakkodi the match turn out to be a big success.
Champion Thomian team was coached by Gayantika Ranasinghe and their foreign coach was Prince Bodu and Rahula team was coached by A. B. Veerappuli.
The St. Thomas team was led by TD Damru Vatsilu and the Rahul College team by KP Ravidu Sameera.
