The development of the sports ground at Matugama C.W.W. Kannangara Central College began on Tuesday (15) with the laying of the foundation stone at a ceremony attended by Health and Mass Media Minister Nalinda Jayatissa.
The project, funded with Rs. 42 million allocated by the Ministry of Education, is aimed at providing the school’s nearly 5,000 students with a safer and more modern environment for sports activities.
Jayatissa, a former student of the college, said several previous governments had been requested to develop the sports ground and that the current government had allocated the funds for the project, which is expected to be completed on schedule.
He also said arrangements would be made this year to provide the school with a medical centre for students and begin construction of a new three-storey building at a cost of Rs. 1, 370 million to address the school’s classroom space requirements.
School Principal P.W.A.A. Lankachandra said discussions had been held with the minister regarding the school’s requirements and that approval had subsequently been granted for the three-storey building.
He said Rs. 20 million had also been allocated to address the school’s hostel requirements.
The sports ground development project is expected to provide facilities that will support students’ physical and mental well-being while helping develop skills such as teamwork, discipline, leadership and cooperation.
Deputy Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Sunil Watagala and several other officials, MPs, school staff, former principals, past students and students also attended the ceremony. (Newswire)
