Medical assistance rushed to Balakawala Kodigahakanda by boat

When 50 residents of Kodigahakanda village of Athuraliya divisional secretariat were in serious condition due to diarrhoea, the two doctors and the public health inspector from the Athuraliya medical officer’s office went in a boat and treated the patients.

Due to the bad weather, Nilwala River overflowed, which was the worst disaster in Matara district. The villagers of Balakawala Kodigahakanda who were surrounded by flood in Athuraliya Divisional Secretariat had diarrhoea and vomiting and there was no way to get treatment for them. According to a message received by the Athuraliya Health Medical Officer, Ruwani Jayasinghe, the three leading doctors and Public Health Inspector Nadish Jayasinghe reached the place in a boat and got the necessary medicines from a drug store in Akuressa.

The doctors were able to monitor the condition of a large number of people including 10 small children from 50 families who were ill, and managed to provide immediate treatment, bringing the patients to a stable state. Athuraliya Divisional Secretary Nirosha Gamage, who was prepared for any disaster situation that could come at any moment, had no difficulty in facing all disaster situations as she had made proper communication beforehand.

The Athuraliya Divisional Secretariat worked diligently to provide food to the large number of displaced persons in the Athuraliya Division by cooking food in the premises of the Jethavanarama Temple in Godapitiya.

On June 05, they prepared food and distributed parcels to over three thousand displaced people based on the financial support provided by DFCC Bank. Under the coordination of Iresha Fernando, Junior Executive Officer of PFS Collection Division of DFCC Bank, with the intervention of Nalin Karunathilaka, Vice President of Sustainable Development Division, Morawaka Manager Ravindra Prabhat arranged to come and provide all the dry food items required for cooking in Akuressa.

On the instructions of Athuraliya Divisional Secretary Nirosha Gamage, Disaster Relief Service Officer Theekshana Wickramaratne and other staff members prepared and distributed this food.

With the help of the Divisional Secretariat and the villagers, efforts had been made to rebuild the people’s lives by disinfecting wells in the flooded and contaminated areas.
