Minister directs officials to address Three-wheeler drivers’ issues

Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena yesterday instructed relevant officials to provide prompt solutions to the problems faced by professional passenger transport three-wheeler drivers. He gave these instructions following a discussion with members of several associations representing passenger transport three-wheeler drivers, centered on several matters, including measures to regulate three-wheelers engaged in passenger transport services.

The representatives of the associations drew the attention of the Minister to some common problems faced by their members. Accordingly measures to regulate three-wheelers in the Western Province, the preparation of a joint programme to regulate operations of three-wheelers covering all provinces and the re-review of the methodology of charging fees for the installation of three-wheeler accessories were discussed.

The minister emphasized to the trade union representatives that the National Transport Commission (NTC) will be the authorized agency for regulating operations of all vehicles used in passenger transport, including three-wheelers.

He said a revised Bill with amended regulations on matters related to regulating operations of three-wheelers has been forwarded to the Attorney General’s Department for its observations. He stressed that it was not possible for anyone to exert undue influence over the process.

Regarding the demands presented by the three wheeler associations, the minister instructed officers to have a discussion with the relevant officials including the NTC Commissioner, at the earliest.

The representatives of the associations who were present expressed their appreciation to the Minister for his intervention to solve their issues.

Officials of several professional three-wheeler associations engaged in passenger transport, including the National Union of Three-Wheeler Drivers and NTC officials participated in the discussion.
