Vijitha Herath officially assumed office on September 25, 2024, as the Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation. Further speaking, he said that the people of the country have entrusted them with a new mandate to build a prosperous nation with clear objectives. He acknowledged the weight of the responsibility placed upon him to fulfill that goal.

In addition to his role as Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation, Vijitha Herath has also been entrusted with the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Buddha Sasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, National Integrity and Social Security, Media, Transport and Highways, Public Security, Environment, Wildlife and Forest Resources, Water Supply, Plantation and Community Infrastructure, Rural and Urban Development, as well as Housing and Construction.
