The Irrigation Department has cautioned that minor flood conditions could develop in the lower reaches of the Attanagalu Oya and Kalu Ganga if significant rainfall is recorded today.
Director of Irrigation, Engineer L. S. Suriya Bandara, said that water levels at Millakanda and Alagawwa monitoring stations are currently at their highest points.
He noted that while the Kelani River has not risen rapidly, a gradual increase is being observed. At present, however, there is no immediate flood risk.
According to Suriya Bandara, water levels in the lower areas of several rivers, Nilwala, Gin, Kelani, Kalu, Attanagalu, and Bentara, have already risen to some extent.
He added that depending on upcoming weather conditions, river levels could rise further.
Residents living in low‑lying areas along these rivers have been urged to remain vigilant and cautious. (Newswire)
