A missile struck a passenger terminal at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday (Oct. 10), injuring several people and forcing the evacuation of the airport, according to The Associated Press (AP).
Two regional officials confirmed that the airport had come under attack, with one reporting that a missile hit a passenger terminal and wounded many people. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.
Ambulances were seen rushing toward the airport following the attack, while flights bound for Riyadh were diverted to other destinations.
Flight-tracking service Flightradar24 reported that flights were being diverted, while Kuwait Airways announced the cancellation of services due to the airport’s closure.
The Canadian Embassy also advised its citizens to avoid all travel to the airport, citing ongoing military activity.
The attack comes amid escalating tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran-backed Houthi rebels in neighboring Yemen.
King Khalid International Airport has been targeted several times over the past week. Earlier attacks, for which the Houthis claimed responsibility, killed four people, including three Saudi citizens and a Sudanese national.
A Riyadh resident told AP that he heard at least two powerful explosions in the Saudi capital.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Saturday’s attack from the Houthis, while Saudi authorities had not publicly confirmed the reported casualties. (Newswire)
